Such Pretty Faces

A Space to Relate and Create

I’ve got good news, and I’ve got great news for you today. This matchy T Shirt Tutorial is here JUST IN TIME for Valentines day AND I have found the perfect heart sunglasses for less than $10. Virtually everyone needs heart sunglasses, I always say.

Last week when it was decided that we would participate in a Valentine craft, I instantly decided that my craft would be 1. Easy 2. Matchy and 3. Inspired by Bon Jovi.

For this project, you will need:

  • Solid Colored T Shirts (this is a great project for any grease stained T’s that need a glow up)
  • Contact Paper , Masking Tape, or Peel and Stick Vinyl
  • Scissors
  • An empty water bottle
  • Bleach
  • Water
  • An Old Cardboard Box
  • A permanent Marker

I told you it’s a simple list, didn’t I?

First thing first- You’re going to make your pattern. I have a downloadable pattern that I used at the bottom of this post, because I think you’re neat. You will Print and cut the outside, then trace the cut out onto your sticky vinyl. ALSO because I think you’re neat, I have an adult sized heart and a child sized heart. Wanna freestyle? DO IT! Plain hearts all over a T would be cute too! The world is your box of chocolates.

NOW, Cut out your vinyl/contact paper design. Take your cardboard and stuff it in your shirt. you want to make sure that your shirt is even on the cardboard and that any excess fabric is tucked behind the box.

Affix your design to your shirt. I eyeballed it, because I am a type B loosey goosey type human but you can measure this if you’re not.

NEXT, take your spray bottle and fill it with 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. You can make the mixture as diluted as 1 to 8, but I find 1 to 3 nets quick results and the kids like seeing things speed along.

With guided hands, you or your kids will simply spray the shirt. My mist is very fine as a byproduct of the type of water bottle I had lying around. ALSO usually I keep essential oils and water in this bottle so you can see where the oil residue didn’t let the bleach work as quickly.

ADDED BONUS, this could count as a science project… Right?

Once the shirt is as light as you want it to be, rinse the shirt in water thoroughly. Make enough for your army of children, or girlfriends, or bros, Throw them through the wash ALONE and BEHOLD: We have Bleach Resist Valentines T’s insipred by Bon Jovi!
