Such Pretty Faces

A Space to Relate and Create

The title of my post is taken from the song by Martina McBride. The last verse goes:

“This one’s for the girls,

Who’ve ever had a broken heart,

Who’ve wished upon a shooting star,

You’re beautiful the way you are,

This one’s for the girls,

Who love without holdin’ back,

Who dream with everything they have,

All around the world,

This one’s for the girls.”

This song came to mind for me this week because THIS week the USA inaugurated the FIRST FEMALE VICE PRESIDENT.  Offended by the caps? Too bad. I “shout” because #katiecan  🙂

While my other posts have had more of a serious and reflective nature, this one comes from a space of PURE JOY. You do not have to be a Feminist to appreciate the magnitude of this moment. I experienced a surge of emotions as the anticipation grew in the days preceding Jan 20, some genuine concern for our new VP’s safety during the ceremony (given recent events) and then after it was completed, the tears flowed freely. I paused to take it all in, and realized in that moment how meaningful it was for ME to see a woman in such a high position of power. I didn’t know how much it meant to me, until it happened. Anyone else ever have a moment like that in their lives (not just tied to the inauguration)?

After taking it in for myself, I observed my young girls as they worked to understand it at their own level. They asked questions about what was happening and what it meant. Showing my young girls PROOF that anything is possible if you work hard towards your goals is a win that transcends all else (for me) right now. I am immensely grateful that they will not remember a day when this achievement was “just a dream to be realized someday.”  And if I’m honest, seeing for myself that anything is possible is a perfectly timed reminder that I didn’t know I needed.

Thank you VP Harris…from the little girls in all of us.
